The Shark Navigator Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner, model NV22L, is a highly popular, fairly inexpensive vacuum made by Euro-Pro.  Many people have seen the made-for-TV infomercials and have been impressed with how light weight and powerful this vacuum is.  People have asked many times if the Shark is as good as the Dyson All Floors models.

Before we dive into the results of our test on the upright Shark Navigator, let’s look at the product specs:

  • Lightweight, at only 18.3 lbs
  • Powerful suction (unfortunately we were not able to get the actual CFM or Airwatt numbers from Euro-Pro)
  • Bagless design
  • Super-stretch hose
  • Filters are washable, lifetime filters
  • Brush On/Off switch, allowing you to effectively vacuum both carpets and hard floors
  • 5 Year LIMITED Warranty (You will see why we highlight the word ‘limited’ below)
  • Cleaning accessories included are: dust brush, crevice tool, 24 inch crevice tool, turbo power brush for pet hair
  • 30 Foot, Non-retractable cord (you will have to wind it up yourself)

Determining the suction power of the Shark was a little more difficult than we would have liked.  We were not able to get any of numbers from Euro-Pro that actually mean anything when it comes to suction power – i.e. the airwatts or CFM that the vacuum creates.  However, so many people LOVE the Shark, that we decided that we had to test if for our selves against the Dyson DC25 All Floors.

From our test (please watch the video of the test), we concluded that while the Shark Navigator is extremely strong, it isn’t quite as strong as the Dyson DC25.  Visually, we actually thought the Shark had done a slightly better job at picking everything up, but when it came to the weight test, the Shark sucked up just a little less.  However, we were extremely pleased with the overall power of this vacuum – especially given the cheap price tag of around $149.

One aspect of the vacuum that you need to be aware of is the fact that there is no height adjustment, automatic or manual.  Typically we would say that his would be a problem with a vacuum, but in our test the Navigator seemed to do great on all three pile heights of carpet and on hard floors.  It sucked up material well on the lower pile, and didn’t stick to nor just push around debri on the higher pile carpeting.  In fact, we were very impressed by how easily the vacuum moved on all three of the tested carpets.

When it comes to suction power for hardwood floors, it also does a good job.  We really like the ability to turn off the beater bar, which is something that you don’t get on many sub $200 vacuums.  We were able to vacuum our floor without worrying about scratching or without having the rotating bar blow dust bunnies around all over the place.  While some people have complained that the exhaust that blows out the front of the vacuum blows everything around, our test didn’t have any such problems.  Even when the vacuum was in the standing position it didn’t blow anything around on the floor, and when the vacuum was tilted back (as it would be when cleaning), then we say no way for that air to blow on the ground.

Overall, we were very impressed with the suction of the Shark Navigator and find it to be one of the most powerful sub-$200 vacuums you can buy.

Ease of Use:

In our tests we found the Shark NV22L very easy to use.  At only 18.3 lbs, it is definitely a light-weight vacuum.  It also moves very easily on both carpet and hard flooring.  Another aspect of the vacuum is that the head width is a little smaller than average (about 1″ smaller than the DC25, and 2-3″ smaller than the Eureka Airspeed).  Some people don’t like this, but we actually found that it didn’t take much longer to vacuum and you were able to fit into some areas that we weren’t with the larger vacuums (under chairs, end tables, etc.).  So, depending on your situation you may or you may not like that aspect.

We also really liked the hose.  It’s long and easy to use, and comes with basically every attachment that you would need – you get the following:

  • small crevice tool
  • 24″ crevice tool
  • Powered turbo brush (for picking up pet hair)
  • Brush for dusting

However, there is one problem that you need to be careful with.  When using the hose you need to make sure the vacuum is positioned so it won’t fall over.  Because the vacuum is so light-weight, if you take the hose off and stretch it going backwards, then the vacuum does fall over backwards easily.  To remedy this, just make sure that whenever you are using the hose you position the vacuum so the hose is pulled forward and not backward.  If you do that then you won’t have any problem reaching almost anything you would ever need to and will love the hose and the attachments.

The durability of the Navigator is very good and probably a little better than other models in the price range.  Most people don’t have many issues/problems with the machine and feel comfortable with fact that the vacuum comes with a 5-year limited warranty.  However, there are a few issues that you should be aware of with the warranty – mainly that Euro-Pro is a pain to deal with.  All their ‘customer service reps’ are overseas, and if you need to have the machine fixed they will require that you pay for the shipping (both ways), which can be expensive.  They don’t have local repair contracts (at least that we have found), so that also won’t be an option if you want Euro-Pro to pay to fix it.   You also need to pay attention to what is covered in the warranty, as it is limited.  It should cover any defects for parts that do not “normally require replacement”.  One example of where people had problems with this was with the beater bar.  Some people have had it stop working after a while, and they had to not only pay to ship it back to get fixed, but they also had to pay for the part since it wasn’t covered under the warranty.

This is really the only knock that we have against the Navigator, and we wonder if Euro-Pro has discounted the vacuum to the point that it can’t afford to pay for the shipping/higher quality service. The vacuum is a great vacuum, and is still worth buying – just be aware that if you have a problem it’s going to be a bigger issue than if you had purchased a Dyson.  Our suggestion – just don’t take the warranty into account at all, and treat it as if you don’t get a warranty with it.

The NV22L comes with lifetime foam filters.  You also receive an extra filter for each in the box, making it so you can wash one and use the other – something we find quite handy.  Unfortunately, these are NOT HEPA filters, they are only foam filters – so you are not going to get the same quality of filtration as you would with other brands such as Dyson (if you are looking for a HEPA filter vacuum for less than $150, we would suggest going with the Eureka Airspeed Bagless vacuum).  You do still get decent filtration,  but not HEPA.

Customer Reviews/Ratings:

The Shark Navigator reviews are some of the highest rated reviews of any vacuum sold.  At it earned a 4.2 out of 5 stars, and a 4.7 from Walmart – again making it one of the highest rated vacuum cleaners sold today.

Our Bottom Line Shark Navigator Upright Bagless Vacuum Review:

We like the Shark, a lot.  In terms of bang for your buck, you get as much out of this vacuum as any other we have tested.  It’s powerful, easy to use, and is built well.  However, if you want a HEPA filter then you will need something else (again, we recommend the Eureka Airspeed or the Dyson DC25).  But if you want power and a small vacuum, then this is great.

What we don’t like – Euro Pro’s customer service / warranty.  We don’t understand why they can’t be better, but they really are a hassle to deal with.  We still recommend this vacuum, but with the caveat regarding the warranty – i.e. don’t expect to be able to use it.  Of course, at 1/3 the price of the Dyson DC25 we still find this model to be attractive to those who want a really good vacuum cleaner at an affordable price.
