|Eureka Boss SmartVac Vacuum|
The Eureka Boss SmartVac 4870 is one of the most popular bagged vacuum cleaners for less than $150. It’s rated very highly by both Consumer Reports and customers, with a 3.8/5 stars from Amazon. Overall, it’s a great vacuum cleaner and is highly recommended if you:
- Want to go with a bagged vacuum cleaner
- Want to spend less than $150
- Are fairly strong and don’t require a light vacuum cleaner
Our Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Vacuum Review
The suction power on the Eureka 4870 MZ won’t let you down. It is quite strong, and most customers really like how well it performs on all levels of carpets and hard floors – even those who rate the vacuum badly still mention frequently that the vacuum does a good job with suction power. When comparing to either the Eureka Airspeed Baggless or Airspeed Baggless Gold, the Boss fits in between the two, but they are all three very strong vacuum cleaners, with their CFM being around the 45 level (CFM is a measure of airflow created by the vacuum cleaner). One additional feature we like with the Smart-Vac is the Direct Air Control System, which allows you to either direct all the suction to the floor to deep clean your carpets, or to the hose, allowing you to clean above floor items extremely well (stairs, upholstery, etc.).
On hard wood floors, the Boss also does a great job in terms of suction. We also like the fact that you can turn the roller brush off, making it so your floors don’t get scratched and so you don’t end up just pushing/blowing stuff around as you try to vacuum it up.
When it comes to picking up pet hair it also does a nice job. We like the Power Paw Brush that comes with this model, as it does great for pet hair, upholstery, and stairs.
Overall, the vacuum does a great job. No, it’s not as strong as the Dyson DC25, the Miele S-Series, or even the Shark Navigator Upright, but you will be more than happy when it comes to cleaning your carpets. One note – because this is a bagged vacuum, the suction power will decrease as the bag/filters get too full. For best results, you need to make sure the bag is not too full, which means replacing it when needed.
Ease of Use:
The Eureka Boss vacuum cleaner is fairly easy to use – as long as you are not a small person. If you are worried about the vacuum being heavy, then you may want to go with something that is lighter, as this one weighs in at a 21.5 lbs – obviously not the lightest vacuum in the world. However, even with this heavy weight, the vacuum does a good job as long as you have the height setting correct for your floor surface. Don’t try to vacuum on the lowest setting if you have thick carpet, unless you want to get one heck of a workout in.
One complaint that people have is when they try to turn off the roller brush for hard-floor cleaning. The setting does work, but there is a little trick to getting it to do so – make sure the machine is turned on, and then rock it back and forth just a little bit to take the pressure off the front wheels. If you do that, then it will disengage the roller brush and you will be good to go.
In terms of ease of use, with the Boss Smart-Vac by Eureka you get a standard, regular vacuum cleaner that does both carpet and hard floors. You don’t get a auto-rewind cord (which we don’t see as that big of a deal and may be a positive down the road), it is heavy, and it’s not a very quiet machine -but it does get the job done.
How long this vacuum lasts is going to be influenced greatly by how well you take care of it. It does come with a 2 year limited warranty, but like all bagged vacuum cleaners, you will need to empty the bag when needed, and keep the machine from getting clogged. Failure to do so will overheat the motor and cause problems in both the short-run and the long-run.
That being said, many customers who have had the Boss for several years still love it and find that as long as it is properly maintained the suction power stays very well.
This is the area where the Smart-Vac by Eureka (and many other bagged vacuum cleaners) really shines – it’s filtration system. The vacuum comes standard with a true 3 stage HEPA filtration system that does an excellent job at clearing allergens and other small particles out of the floors/air. In addition, it’s a completely sealed system, meaning that none of those particles are going to escape while vacuuming. If you are someone who suffers from allergies, but don’t want to spend more than $150, then this might just be the vacuum cleaner for you, as the filtration system really is about as good as you get in this price range. Yes, you will have to replace the bags, which will cost more than a normal bag, but it’s worth it given what the system does.
The Eureka Boss Smart vacuum cleaner is a great, standard vacuum cleaner that has a few very nice strong points:
- Excellent suction power
- Excellent filtration
Basically, if you want a vacuum cleaner that does it’s job at a good price and you care about filtration, then this would be a great choice. The negatives we found were:
- Heavy. At 21.5 pounds, combined with great suction power, you don’t want this one if you are not somewhat strong and want a light vacuum cleaner
- Not extremely quite
- A little awkward to put the vacuum into the hard flooring cleaning setting
Price/Where to Buy the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Vacuum Cleaner:
One of the best places to buy this vacuum is directly through Amazon. You get the piece of mind of ordering it from one of the largest retailers in the world, and you get one of the best prices (if not the best price) on the current model.
