Overall Rating

The Eureka Airspeed Bagless vacuum cleaner is the latest in Eureka bagless line, and comes with a lot of fan-fair due to it’s claim of being able to remove more dirt and clean carpets better than the Dyson DC 14, 17 or the DC25.   While our tests did not show that the Eureka Airspeed AS1000A was better than the Dyson DC25, they still showed that the vacuum offers tremendous value and extremely strong suction power – making this one of our top rated in the “Best Vacuum for the Money” category.  If you are looking for a good vacuum cleaner with HEPA filtration for less than $150, this may just be the one for you.

Our Eureka Airspeed Review:

Suction Power:

As claimed, the suction power of the Eureka is very powerful.  We called the manufacturer to find out how much suction power the vacuum produces (we hate looking only at the AMPs a vacuum cleaner uses, and prefer using either CFM or Airwatts instead), and we were pleasantly surprised when they actually were able to tell us the numbers (This information has been very hard to get from many other manufacturers)!   Measured at the bottom of the vacuum cleaner, the CFM is approximately 45 CFM, and measured from the hose it is approximately 83 CFM.  While those numbers are not the best in class, they are very good – especially since that is measured not from the motor but from the base and the hose.

Since it’s always difficult to compare those numbers from one vacuum to another, given that every manufacturer seems to either use different numbers or measure from different areas, we decided to test this one against the Dyson DC25 All Floors model and the Shark Navigator Upright.

Compared to the Dyson and Shark, the Eureka didn’t do quite as good of a job.  However, this is partially due to the fact that the Dyson and Shark both do not need to be manually adjusted, while the Eureka does – which caused the Eureka Airspeed Bagless review and test results to be a little skewed, as the vacuum pushed some of the larger particles off the carpet.  Basically, in terms of suction power, it’s a little less powerful than either the Shark or Dyson, but it’s still very good and very highly rated.   It’s one of the most power vacuums in the sub-$120 range.

One of the best compliments I have heard about the Eureka Airspeed Bagless upright actually came from a competitor at Hoover (which is another vacuum company I admire and think does a great job).  One of their engineers said that when they visited the manufacturing plant that builds the Airspeed they were very impressed and thought the machine is a great vacuum.  This told me two things:

  1. The Eureka is made at a solid plant, meaning your chance of getting a lemon is low
  2. It does a great job of doing what it’s supposed to – cleaning your carpets

For what it’s worth, that same engineer ripped the Dyson and the Bissel vacuums pretty harshly, telling me he wasn’t just being nice to the competition when it comes to the Eureka AS1000A.

Ease of Use -

The Airspeed Bagless by Eureka is very easy to use.   Here is what made the vacuum easy to use:

  • It only weighs 18.5 pounds, making it fairly lightweight.
  • The cord length is great.  At 27 ft you are able to vacuum quite a large area without having to unplug the cord and find another outlet, and is longer than the Dyson DC25 cord.
  • The extension hose and the accessories that come standard with the machine are terrific.   In addition to the very long and sturdy extension hose, you also get a crevice brush, dusting brush, and a turbo brush that does a great job on pet hair and upholstery.  Basically, you get everything you need with the standard package, which I like a lot.
  • Edge cleaner – there is a small brush that sticks out on the edge which helps get the corners next to the wall of the carpet while vacuuming so you don’t always have to break out the extension hose to clean the corners.  This feature is not available on the Shark.

Now, for the negatives that we hope the company improves upon in the next models:

  • You can’t turn off the beater bar.  This makes it difficult to clean your hardwood floors, and makes it so you have to be careful when using the extension hose/tools.  Because the Eureka Airspeed is so powerful, you can actually damage your carpet if you have the bar running in the same place for an extended period of time.
  • You have to manually adjust the height settings.  Of course, this could also be a positive in that you don’t have to worry about an auto-adjusting mechanism breaking after a year or two.

Durability -

With a two year limited warranty and solid build, we expect the Eureka Airspeed AS1000A to be a vacuum that lasts longer than two years.  We would expect between 2-5 years as long as you take care of the vacuum properly (cleaning filters, not banging it around, etc.).  In addition, we have more confidence in Eureka backing their warranty than we do some other brands (like Europro/Shark).  They have great customer service people when you call in, and they are actually helpful and are not in a call center overseas, which means they can actually help you with something other than the standard questions and can forward you to someone up the chain if they can’t help you.

Filter -

We love the filtration on this model.  It comes standard with a HEPA filter, which filters at least 99.7% of all particles down to 0.3 microns…which means it’s good for alergy sufferers or those worried about air quality when vacuuming.  This is one of the reasons why you might choose the Eureka Airspeed vs Shark Navigator if you are looking for a vacuum under $150.

The one issue that we have with the filtration system is the maintenance from a $$$ standpoint.  Their are two filters that are not lifetime filters.  The HEPA filter (EF-6, $10.99) must be replaced every 6-12 months, and the dust cup filter (DCF-21, $14,99) needs to be replaced every 6 months.   Basically, you can get away with replacing the HEPA every 12 months, which means you have to put in around $40 each year to maintain the vacuum.

One interesting note that I received from a rep at Eureka is that they recommended that you DON’T clean the HEPA filter with water, that you simply use the brush tool that comes with the vacuum to clean it.  Personally, I would probably brush the filter off really well, then clean with hot water and let dry for at least 24 hours.

Customer Reviews -

The Eureka Airspeed Baggless has earned some of the highest reviews from large sellers such as Walmart and Amazon, earning 4.5/5 stars at Walmart, and 4.1/5 stars from Amazon (for their Gold model, which is basically the same thing just a little longer cord and sold from Amazon and is the model we actually recommend buying).

Our Review -

The bottom line is that we highly recommend the Airspeed.  Its a great vacuum with strong suction, good tools, good warranty, and great filtration – all for under $130!  If you are comparing this to the Dyson DC25, then you basically get a slightly less powerful, heavier machine and less warranty, but you also spend 1/3 of the price.  Comparing against the Shark Navigator, you get a slightly less powerful, heavier machine and less warranty, but you do get the HEPA filtration.  However, remember that you will have to replace the filters on the Airspeed, which makes it more expensive than the Shark in the long-run.

Where to Buy -

The best place to buy the Eureka Airspeed bagless upright is Amazon.  The model that is available their, which is technically branded as the ‘Gold’ model is the exact same as the AS1000A, just with a longer cord (32 ft) and hose (14 ft).
